At South Hunsley School and Sixth Form, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, inclusive and ambitious careers programme for all students from Year 7 to Year 13.

Our careers provision is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to make well-informed decisions about their future and to successfully move into further education, apprenticeships, training or employment. Our programme meets Department for Education statutory guidance and is fully aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance. How we measure and access the impact of the Careers Programme

We will assess the impact of its careers programmes on students by completing annual Future Skills Questionnaire. After each careers event or activity and analysing destinations data in line with activities that they have taken part in at school. In addition, the views of students and parents will be surveyed after key events e.g. Year 9 Options Evening, Year 11 GCSE Evening, Parents Evenings.

Bird Camera

We are very excited to be able to share the link for our bird camera. So far, we have been able to watch Betty the Blue Tit’s eggs hatch and their first feed. Looking at the footage we think there are 7 baby chicks in the nest. The eggs hatched on 9 May, and blue tits will fledge the nest around 18 to 21 days after hatching, so we are expecting the chicks to start fledging from the 27 May, however they may be a bit earlier. Keep checking out the live stream to not miss out. We will keep updating X (@SouthHunsleyEco) with important changes.

Spring Gardening

It is getting to that time when we are wanting to start planting out flowers to make the gardens look pretty. A few weeks ago, we planted some pots with geraniums and dahlias and placed them around the Kingston pond, these flowers will help to attract bees and butterflies to the area, which increases the biodiversity. Biodiversity and school grounds are topics that we have chosen to focus on this year for our Green Flag award, and this planting helps both. Gardens are excellent places for increasing biodiversity as they provide green corridors and sections of habitats that contain the environments and food for insects, especially bees and butterflies. Even if you do not have a large garden, you can plant containers on patios or windowsills. Species that are bee and butterfly friendly include alliums, buddleias, lavender, marigolds, peonies, sunflowers and roses. Bees love blue and purple plants, so look out for these colours when choosing plants.

You may be thinking, why do we need to help bees? Bees are currently under threat by humans due to urbanisation, chemical uses that leaks into their food supply, and habitat destruction. Bees pollinate 90% of our food worldwide, so they are very important to us, meaning that we need to try and help them increase in population. Most people are planting flowers anyway, so it would just make sense to ensure we are planting bee friendly flowers.

A group of our DofE students have successfully completed their Bronze expedition assessment, having the opportunity to showcase their communication and leadership skills.

In order to complete their DofE Award, students have to complete one activity for all four sections – Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Their expedition consisted of a two day and one night trip getting to grips with the outdoors.

Day one of the expedition saw our groups walked a variety of routes from Hovingham towards Welburn or Sheriff Hutton before being transported to our campsite at Snowball Plantation where groups set-up their camp and cooked together. They then played rounders in the sun – even after all of that hiking – before enjoying smores around the campfire.

On day two, groups packed down their camp and packed it all back into their bags to carry again for another 6 hours. They walked in their groups from Fridaythorpe to Millington in wet conditions and were relieved to make it to the finish line!

Congratulations to all groups for passing their assessment and for earning the feedback from assessors about how well they had worked together and maintained resilience when getting lost. Thank you also to the volunteer staff who gave their time to support the students.

A group of 13 South Hunsley students were given positive feedback from a popular children’s author as part of the New Views Playwriting Competition.

Christopher William Hill provided constructive comments about the scripts and highlighted what worked well in their writing.

Speaking of one student’s work, Christopher wrote:

“This is a strong and tightly constructed script, switching effortlessly between different time periods to chronicle the slow implosion of a grieving family.”

Another comment on a student’s script he wrote;

“There’s a strong sense of theatricality in this script, an understanding of how the play might look on stage and the impact the unfolding drama would have on the audience. The sense of period is very strong in this new draft, and the characters are more sharply defined, more complicated than before.”

New Views is the National Theatre’s annual playwriting competition for groups of students aged between 14 and 19 in schools and colleges across the country.

Well done to all the budding writers!

We received fantastic news that our Eco Schools Green Flag award has been renewed for another year, acknowledging that South Hunsley has been recognised as having an excellent commitment to the national programme and driving an environmentally conscious message throughout the school.

Speaking of the achievement, the assessor gave the following feedback:

It’s wonderful that you have appointed such a representative Eco-Committee, this shows your school’s excellent commitment to both the programme and the eco-cause. It’s great to see that you had such a group of eager, enthusiastic volunteers. It was also wonderful to see that they were supported by no less than four members of staff and that a key member of the SLT was deeply involved.

It was wonderful to see how completing your Environmental Review helped to raise the level of awareness in your school and helped your Eco-Committee to identify the issues and spot gaps in your school’s existing environmental activity. It was also brilliant to read that the Environmental Review helped your pupils appreciate everything that your school is already doing to benefit our environment and identify areas to work on in the future. It was great to see how you carefully considered findings from your Environmental Review and factored them into the creation of your Action Plan. A great sign of critical thinking! Your Action Plan shows that your Eco-Committee have carefully considered how they can involve their entire school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities to achieve maximum impacts and raise awareness amongst their school community.

We love the range of activities that you and your Eco-Committee planned for delivery. The fact that they cover both indoor (an anti-fast fashion campaign) and outdoor (litter-picks, planting wildflowers, building bird boxes and bug hotels) activities is excellent. It was also great to see accountability and monitoring and evaluation clearly marked in your Action Plan. Great work!

Your Curriculum Link examples are imaginative, practical and fun, making environmental education accessible and engaging, well done! We’re really impressed at how you’ve linked environmental issues to a variety of curriculum areas. We loved seeing the excellent photos of pupil’s work and of them enjoying their activities. This is a great example of layering in sustainability and climate change into your studies. We loved reading about how you had incorporated learning about global issues not only into the Geography and Science Curriculum (most common ones) in your school, but also into other areas such as MFL. Great work! A challenge for next year might be expanding this to incorporate these issues into other areas of learning like English, Maths, Art or D&T!

Your Eco-Board is great. Your board is incredibly visual and engaging and promotes your work in a very attractive way. We loved hearing how active your Eco-Committee was in communicating their activities school-wide with both assembly and class feedback and use of posters, the school newsletter, website and social media as well as the Eco-board itself. These all combine to make a great approach! We love that your pupils have taken their great work beyond the school gates and into their local community with your excellent tree planting scheme at Melton Quarry, where we were delighted to hear you had planted a fantastic 360 trees – superb! We are also certain that your pupils will have greatly benefitted from your involvement with such outside organisations as this, and your companion Hunsley Primary School.

The parent quote is a great testament to the work that you are doing with your Eco-Committee, that they are taking their Eco-Schools work home with them and getting their families on board is something to be proud of! Your Eco-Code is really smart and concise. It’s a great message and its punchy nature will definitely help it be processed by everyone passing by your Eco-Board.

I hope you and your Eco-Committee take great pride in your achievements, when listed it’s surprising how many there are – however, the improvements to your school environment with the lovely range of biodiversity initiatives and, most of all, your fantastic tree-planting at the quarry (we loved that) all nicely stand out!

Congratulations to everyone for the great work you have managed to do, earning your Green Flag with Merit in style. You should all be very proud of your work and the application you have submitted!

]]> South Hunsley School Presents: Musical Mayhem! https://southhunsley.org.uk/south-hunsley-school-presents-musical-mayhem/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 09:50:00 +0000 https://southhunsley.org.uk/?p=6058 South Hunsley School and Sixth Form presents Musical Mayhem – a celebration of the last decade of singing, dancing and acting in a range of well known classics from stage and screen. 

The show opened with a rendition of ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’ from Oliver!, a 1960’s musical based on a novel by Charles Dickens.

Next on the bill was Fame, a musical film about a New York High School for Performing Arts. Our students performed the well known hits Fame and Hard Work.

The show continued with a scene from the musical homage to 80’s megaband Queen titled We Will Rock You, with songs Radio Gaga and Seven Seas of Rye.

Horror comedy rock musical Little Shop of Horrors was next up, a story about a florist worker who raises a plant that feeds on humans. The ensemble performed Dentist and Don’t Feed the Plants from this Broadway production.

A rendition of the 1965 classic The Sound of Music treated the audience to popular songs So Long, Farewell, Do Re Mi and My Favourite Things.

The show continued with an extract from The Wizard of Oz, with our performers singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and We’re Off to See the Wizard.

Following a short interval, students sang You’re in the Band and Stick it to the Man, rock hits from The School of Rock – a stage rendition of the 2003 movie.

Next on the bill was Grease with Summer Nights and We Go Together – a coming of age classic that has stood the test of time.

Our Sixth Form performers showed their spooky side with songs from stage adaptation The Addams Family, with When You’re an Addams and Pulled.

The show closed with High School Musical, the aptly titled musical film that has been a favourite with younger audiences since 2006. The whole ensemble joined together to perform Stick to the Status Quo before finishing with All In This Together – a high energy dance hit which had the audience bopping along too.

We are so proud to see how far the students have come and we look forward to hearing where the Arts will take our performers in the future.

Thank you to all student performers, student helpers, staff and parents who were able to make the show a success. We can’t wait for the next feature!

Literacy

Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible.

We aim to deliver a curriculum that enables all students to realise their full potential and make a positive contribution by continually enhancing whole-school literacy so that it supports understanding and communication. We explicitly teach literacy in all subject areas by teaching students what reading, writing and oracy look like in each discipline and promote a strong reading culture across the whole school, including staff.

When students join us in Year 7 or part way through the year in Year 8 or 9 they will complete a set of assessments which, combined with any Key Stage 2 data from their primary school, allow class teachers to best support them in lessons. Our English and Drama teachers also share feedback specifically around reading, spelling, writing, speaking and handwriting across Year 7-11 so that we can make sure that all students are appropriately supported in these areas. There are a number of pages in our planners which focus on literacy and we regularly review the planner content.

These assessments are:

The CAT (Cognitive Ability Tests) which include verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial awareness

The NGRT (New Group Reading Test) which is an adaptive test and looks at reading comprehension

The NGST (New Group Spelling Test) which is also an adaptive test and looks at spelling skills

Library

Our school library has hundreds of books that are available for students to borrow, and also acts as an after school study space. Students can complete a loyalty card and join our ‘Wall of Fame’ to show their love of reading.

Students are also able to access the Library Catalogue, where they can search for books and other resources.

Monday – Thursday – 8.30am-5.00pm
Friday – 8.30am-4.30pm
Please note that the Library is closed for lunch between 1.00pm-1.15pm

Vocabulary

We have a whole school focus on vocabulary with teachers using three key strategies to explicitly teach students vocabulary – you can hear more about these strategies in our ‘Building a Love of Reading’ video below.

  1. Choral repetition – the teacher introduces a new word and students repeat it back as a group to build confidence. The teacher might highlight challenging parts of the word to say
  2. Morphology and Etymology – breaking a word down into its parts and looking at the history behind a word. The teacher might also highlight challenging parts of the word to spell
  3. Word difficulty spectrum – taking a list of vocabulary and deciding which words are easier to understand than others. The teacher might also discuss how words appear in different contexts and how they might have multiple meanings

Building a Love of Reading

Reading

Read Aloud (Year 7 & 8)

Students in Year 7 and 8 participate in our Read Aloud programme twice a week during form time. Form tutors will read aloud from a book that they and every student in the form group have a copy of so that they can follow along. The evidence suggests that this is a great way of modelling speaking and allows students to experience a text as a group.

World Book Day

Every year we celebrate World Book Day in March with a variety of events throughout the day, including teachers sharing their favourite books and book stalls available around the school.

Top tips for Reading Together 

  • Encourage your child to borrow books from the school library, or from your local East Riding Library 
  • You can sign up to your local library here: https://www.eastriding.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/ 
  • You can also download the free BorrowBox app if you have signed up to your local library which has ebooks and audiobooks available for free 
  • Try looking up any words your child is not sure about the meaning of on dictionary.com or etymonline.com (where you can find out about the history of a word) 
  • Try sounding out any words that are challenging to predict, it is likely that your child did phonics in primary school and you can find a reminder of the key ideas around decoding in reading here: What is Phonics? Parent Guide | ReadwithPhonics.com 
  • Discuss what is happening in the book – simple questions like who, when, why, what, where, how can be useful as well as discussing how the characters might feel in a given situation 

Additional Support

We aim to accurately identifying gaps in, or barriers to learning, so that we provide timely and effective support for students through teaching and targeted intervention. Using various diagnostic tests we are able to provide bespoke support both in school and via online resources for students to use at home.

Support with Reading

We have Guided Reading Groups where students spend one tutor time session per week, for 10 weeks, completing an extra reading comprehension session with one of our trained Teaching Assistants. In these sessions they will be part of a small group (no more than five students) and they will read their selected book together and discuss what is happening in the book. To further support their progress we would also recommend that you read with your child at home, ideally for at least 1 hour per week. This could include fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as news articles or other texts. Whilst specifically targeted at improving reading we also hope that these sessions will support progress in their literacy skills. After 10 weeks students will be reassessed to see if we need to continue with the additional support.  

Support with Spelling

Students have access to the IDL Literacy Software, an online programme which allows students to work at their own pace through a series of mini lessons designed to improve their spelling skills. Some students may be invited to join a group in a computer room one form time a week to access this programme with additional support from trained Teaching Assistants.

Support with Speaking

We have student mentors in Year 10 and 12 who work with our Year 7, 8 and 9 students through the online programme ‘Chatta’. The programme allows students to create storyboards and record audio, before listening back and improving their stories. They will then write these up to be put in an electronic book of short stories where they are the authors. English and Drama teachers can nominate students for this programme to support them with their speaking skills.

Support with Writing

If a student has been identified through our baseline writing assessment in English lessons in Year 7 and 8 as needed additional support with writing they will receive an access code for the online programme ‘Pobble’ which helps students to develop their creative writing skills. Pobble has a different writing prompt every day with extra scaffolding through story starters and questions to help students write more confidently.

Support with Handwriting

If a concern with handwriting has been identified then students will be given a handwriting book to complete, along with the following instructions. even if your child has not been given a handwriting book the guidance here might be helpful to ensure their writing is clear and legible.

Consistency: Choose one handwriting style. Printed, cursive writing or joined up writing are all handwriting styles. It is a choice. What matters is legibility and speed. Cursive writing, if not done right, can affect readability. It is also not always the fastest handwriting style. 
Practical: Make sure you write on lined or squared paper (you should use your purple book!). It really helps letter legibility. Work that is uneven and not sitting on a line can be difficult for the eye to scan and read. 
Suitability: Picking the perfect pen. Pens come in different shapes and styles. Most are ergonomically designed. These contours help the fingers feel comfortable when writing. Biro, fibre tip, gel or ink can make a difference to handwriting legibility. You need to find the one you like. And it doesn’t have to be the most expensive pen. 
Performance: Staying up late. Research has proven that when we are tired we write faster. And this affects handwriting legibility. If you are tired when you go to school or when you do an exam your handwriting quality will be affected. 
Encourage: Everything is possible. It takes weeks for a habit to change. Handwriting can be improved. But there will be no overnight success. You need to accept that improving your writing style is a strategic move. There are no quick fixes. Don’t give up! I’ve heard teachers tell people there is no point in teaching handwriting after the age of 9. This is totally untrue. Whatever your age, it is possible to improve handwriting. Because we are not seven years old our brains are not so adaptable. It might take longer. But it is achievable. 

If a concern with handwriting has been identified then students will be given a handwriting book to complete, along with the following instructions. even if your child has not been given a handwriting book the guidance here might be helpful to ensure their writing is clear and legible.
– Sit at a table in an appropriate position for handwriting. 
– Leave a consistently sized space of 1.5-2 centimetres between words. 
– Write capital letters and digits in a size that matches the size of any lowercase letters. 
– Write with letters that are all a similar size. 
– Lower case letters without long ascenders should be about half the height of the space between lines; upper case letters should almost touch the line above.  
– The letter ‘i’ should be dotted with a single small point, as should full stops.  
– Keep your writing lines horizontal and keeping the space between lines parallel and consistent. Write on the line and not above it. 
– Keep the downstrokes of your writing upright and parallel. 
– Make sure that descenders of one line do not touch the ascenders of the line below. 
– Decide whether or not to use joined up handwriting and be consistent in this choice. 
– Begin writing each line about a centimetre to the right of the margin. Be consistent with this distance on each line, apart from new paragraphs, which should leave a three-to-four-centimetre gap. 

Support with Dyslexia

We work closely with Dyslexia Sparks, a local charity, who run training sessions for teachers and Teaching Assistants to ensure the best possible provision in the classroom for our students with Dyslexia. Our three key vocabulary strategies are targeted at the barriers that dyslexic students may face in terms of phonological awareness, memory and self-esteem. All students with dyslexia have access to the IDL Literacy Software (details above in the ‘Support with Spelling’ section) and the Pobble Creative Writing Programme (details about in the ‘Support with Writing’ section). Additional Literacy Support

English as an Additional Language

A number of our students are bilingual which we recognise as an incredible skill, and something they should be proud of and encouraged to share. Students who experience another language at home or speak another language are described as speaking ‘English as an Additional Language’. When students join us in Year 7 or part way through a year we carry out an assessment designed by EALStar to determine a level of proficiency in English, the majority of our students are then described as being ‘fluent’ in English but we then have additional support available for any that might need this.

Where possible we aim to be able to support students with taking a language GCSE in their first or home language. Students will be approached in Year 9 about this and can often take the GCSE a year early at the end of Year 10. RE: Changemakers

South Hunsley School is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion throughout its practice and creating a safe inclusive environment for all students and colleagues. To support the effective development and implementation of the school’s equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, we would like to invite students to join a collaborative working group, named the Changemakers.

The Changemakers will:
• Raise awareness of and provide advice on issues of equality, diversity and inclusion
• Highlight areas for action to representatives of the Senior Leadership Team and the Lead for PSHE
• Support the development of an equality and diversity action plan
• Champion equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the school

The Changemakers reflect a broad cross-section of experiences, backgrounds, knowledge and interests. The group is chaired by a member of the Senior Leadership Team and the school Lead for PSHE; who listen to the group and share their feedback to enact positive change within our school community.

How do I apply for a place for my child?
You can contact the East Riding School Admissions Team by email at schooladmissions@eastriding.gov.uk, by writing to School Admissions Team, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, County Hall, Beverley, HU17 9BA. You can also call 01482 392100 in school hours. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2025.
How many students do you accept in a year group?
Every year we have 350 places available to new Year 7 students. Places are allocated in line with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s co-ordinated admission scheme, and we priorities as follows:
– Children who are looked after by a local authority and to children who were previously looked after, including children who were previously looked after by a local authority outside England, but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order.
– Children who live in the school’s designated catchment area.
– Children who have a sibling attending the school in Years 7 to 10.
– Children who have attended the school’s named feeder junior or primary schools since the beginning of National Curriculum Year 3.
– Children of members of staff working at South Hunsley School and Sixth Form.
– Children who live closest to the school. The distance from the child’s home to the school will be measured and priority will be given to those living nearest to the school.
Can I put my child’s name down for a place to start in Year 7 in September?
All of our Year 7 admissions are handled by the Schools Admissions Team at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, you will need to contact them to apply for a place for the following academic year.
Can you tell me if my child has been allocated a place to start in September?
The Schools Admissions Team allocate all school places and they will confirm to you by your preferred method once the allocations have been released on the 2 March 2026. We do not receive notification of allocations before this time.
Now you are an academy, can you select who you would like to admit?
No, we are still bound by the admissions code and all our admissions are dealt with in the same way as if we were an LA maintained school.

We live out of catchment. Can I apply for a place?
You can apply for a place at South Hunsley via the Schools Admission Team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Please give consideration to school transport, as there is no obligation for a child to be provided with transport to a school outside of their catchment area.

My child attends another school but is unhappy there, we live out of catchment. Can I apply for a place?
You can apply for a place at South Hunsley at any time via the Schools Admission Team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council. A place can only be granted if there is a space in that specific year group.
My application for a place has been turned down as you are oversubscribed, can that decision be changed?
You can appeal our decision not to admit your child and your appeal will be heard by an independent panel who are completely impartial and will make a decision based on the information provided by both sides. Your appeal must be lodged with the School Admissions Team by 17 April 2026 who will arrange this on your behalf.
My child has not been allocated a place, do you have a waiting list for the September intake?
The Schools Admission Team hold a waiting list for the September intake only, there is always movement as students decline their places and opt to be educated elsewhere but we cannot guarantee how many that will be. We will continue to take students until we are at capacity at 350.
I would like to apply for a place but before I do this, I would like to come and have a look around, is this possible?
We try, where possible, to facilitate tours if we have places available. These tours are facilitated by Mrs Beharrell, Transition Co-ordinator. If there are no places available to offer in the year group you are requesting, we would not normally be able to accommodate a tour due to operational logistics.
We are moving to the area and would like to apply for a place, can I do this now?
Unfortunately proof of your address will be required for the admission application if you are moving into the catchment area, once you have provided proof of address, your application will be dealt with as soon as possible by the Schools Admissions Team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
I live in catchment but my child attends private school, will I automatically be entitled to a place under the Fair Access Protocol if I opt to take them out?
Unfortunately, as you have chosen to opt out of the state education system, you have forfeited your right to an automatic placement at a state school. You can make an application and if there are spaces you will be allocated a place, if we are over subscribed and a request for a place is turned down, you have the right to appeal our decision.
What are your feeder primary schools?
Our feeder primaries are South Cave, North Cave, Swanland, North Ferriby, Welton, Brough, Elloughton and Hunsley Primary.
I want to move my child to one of your feeder primaries, if I do this are they guaranteed a place at South Hunsley School?
The admission code states that a child must have attended a junior or primary feeder school from the start of Year 3, the school year in which the child becomes eight years old. Attending a feeder school does not guarantee a child a place at the secondary school.

Admission to South Hunsley Secondary School

Every year we have 350 places available to new Year 7 pupils. Places are allocated in line with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s co-ordinated admission scheme, and we priorities as follows:

Admission Arrangements for the 2026-27 academic year

The trust board of The Education Alliance Multi Academy Trust determined the admission arrangements (Admissions Policy 2026-2027) for the 2026-27 school year in March 2026.  At this meeting the trust board formally approved the following documents and approved the following admission numbers for the following schools:

  • Beverley Minster CE Primary School, 30 places
  • Driffield School and Sixth Form, 240 places
  • Howden Junior School, 60 places
  • Hunsley Primary, 30 places
  • Malet Lambert School, 350 places
  • North Cave Primary School, 20 places
  • South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College, 350 places
  • The Snaith School, 150 places
  • Wilberfoss Church of England Primary School, 30 places

For applications to start a secondary school for the first time in September 2026, appeal forms should be submitted by the parent/carers by 17 April 2026 and appeals are planned to be held between May and June 2026.

Starting school in September 2027

For applications to start a primary school for the first time in September 2027, appeal forms should be submitted by the parent / carers by 21 May 2027 and appeals are planned to be held in June and July 2027.

For applications to start a secondary school for the first time in September 2027, appeal forms should be submitted by the parent / carers by 16 April 2027 and appeals are planned to be held between May and June 2027.

Admission arrangements for the 2027-28 school year

From September 2027 our Pupil Admission Number is 350.

Admission to Year 7

If you want to apply for a place in Year 7 at South Hunsley for entry in September 2027, you will need to apply through the local authority responsible for the area where you live, even if you want a place for your child at a school in another local authority’s area.

Our normal school admissions arrangements apply when a child is transferring from primary school to secondary education at the end of Year 6.

Our in-year admission arrangements apply when a child is already attending another secondary school and parents want to move their child to South Hunsley.

If you want to make an in year application you will have to apply to the Local Authority responsible for the area you live.  More information is available on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website, and for those parents living within the East Riding, the council will ask you to complete and submit an In Year Application Form.

Applications to start our school for the first time, for the start of Year 7 should be made direct to the Local Authority in which you live by the deadline for applications. Late applications will be considered after those submitted by the deadline, often when there are no places available so it is important that you apply on-time.  If you live in the East Riding of Yorkshire Council area, then you can find more information about ‘normal’ admissions processes, deadlines, details of the appeal process and other information at www.eastriding.gov.uk/apply-for-a-school-place.  If you live outside the East Riding, you should apply to your ‘home’ Local Authority and not East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
When applying for a place you should also complete the supplementary information form that you may wish to complete to provide additional information for the admission authority.  This should be returned to the school direct by the deadline for applications and not the Local Authority.

How do I apply for an 'in-year' school place for my child?

Although we are an Academy, and the admissions authority for the school is the Academy Trust we have formally requested that applications for school places are made through the local authority’s co-ordinated admissions scheme for in-year applications.  Applications to start our school in-year should be made direct to the Local Authority no earlier than one term before the place is required, and it is recommended that you apply no later than a period of twenty school days, that is four weeks in term time, before you wish for the place to be available for your child.  Applications are considered in the order that they have been received, for example if there is one space available in a year group, the parent/carer who applied for their place first will likely be allocated the place for their child.  Proof of residence may be required before places can be allocated, and the school fully adheres to the East Riding Fair Access Protocol.  Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application as soon as is possible, though this is commonly ten school days after an application has been received, but may be later in certain circumstances.

Who makes the decisions on school admissions applications?

As we are an Academy, the admissions authority for the school is the Academy Trust.  It is the admission authority, and not the Local Authority who determines whether there is an available place based upon the capacity of the class/year group and the number of pupils already on roll. As the admissions authority we delegate the actual allocation of individual school places to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, based on the admissions criteria set out in our admissions policy.

How can I make a school admissions appeal?
