House Information

The house structure was introduced to add capacity and create closer communities of students to ensure all students continue to receive the best possible support within a growing school.

We have six houses: Draco, Orion, Hercules, Pegasus, Indus and Vela.  These names were suggested and voted for by students, staff and parents after a House consultation in June 2013.

Six strong house communities

As the school grows in size, our priority is for all students to access the same high quality pastoral care and support that is available to them now. The six houses ensure students feel part of a small but strong group in a growing school community.

A sense of ownership for students

Each house has its own distinctive character which captures what it means to be a member of the South Hunsley community. We hope all students feel proud to belong to their House and strive to be the best, not only for themselves but also for their fellow House members.

Team motivation and rewards

The rewards system encourages students to work as a team and to support every member of their House. A wide range of events will take place throughout the school year to promote community spirit and healthy competition between the Houses.

A sense of responsibility

Belonging to a House will create a strong sense of community and encourage students to look out for one and other and achieve highly for each other. Each House has its own individual identity and a set of core values which will be reflected in the behaviour, manner and work of all its students and staff.

House Rewards Structure

The aim of the House rewards is to encourage team motivation and to ensure all students aspire to achieve as fully rounded young people, both inside and outside South Hunsley.  Students will have a sense of ownership for their House and we aim to provide a wide range of events including sporting and cultural to promote teamwork and a community spirit.

All staff, students and parents will be made aware of how many points each House has received and students are able to spend their house points in the school points shop. There are a variety of prizes that students can buy ranging from a pencil to Amazon vouchers.

Each week, the overall house point’s totals are put onto the tutor message board for students to see.

House FAQ's

If my child is in the same tutor group and follows the same timetable, how will they benefit from the House system?
By creating six House communities as opposed to five year groups we can make sure students continue to feel part of a small but strong group as the school grows in size. Close monitoring of their progress and pastoral data will also continue and be used to produce a rounded picture of each student’s journey through South Hunsley. We are encouraging team motivation and will be implementing a new rewards structure which will award students with ‘House points’ and embed a sense of ownership for each student in each House.

If my child is unhappy in their nominated House, will they be able to move?
All form groups are already established and have been carefully designed around students’ abilities. In order to sort each form group into a House we have gathered numerous data to ensure that every House has a wide spread of students and that all students will be happy. We will not be able to move students into a different House.

Will my child move into a different tutor group?
No, all students will stay in the same tutor group they have been in since Year 7.
