What will I learn?
AS Further Maths
At AS you will study Pure and Discrete Maths and also Statistics.
Pure Maths includes imaginary and complex numbers, matrices and hyperbolic trigonometric functions.
Discrete maths is the study of graphs, network flows and game theory amongst other things.
Statistics involves learning about discrete and continuous random variables.
A Level Further Maths
Much like A Level Maths the full Further Maths A Level also develops further the skills learned at AS level in each of the areas of Pure, Discrete and Statistics.
Pure extends knowledge of matrices and vectors and also begins to apply calculus to the hyperbolic trigonometric functions.
Discrete introduces group theory and also other new algorithms such as the simplex algorithm.
Statistics introduces other distributions such as t-distribution and exponential distribution.
Entry requirements
Specific entry requirements: Must also take A Level Maths and have achieved at least a grade 7 (preferably a grade 8 or 9) at GCSE Maths.
This course will be assessed at both AS and A Level, making a popular choice for a fourth subject.
Future careers
Structural Engineer, Software Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Doctor, Architect.
