Is this course for me?
If you enjoyed Mathematics at GCSE, found the subject interesting and did well at it, then these are good reasons for considering an A Level Maths course. Also, you may feel that it is a useful subject either for everyday life, or to support other subjects you wish to study.
What will I learn?
Year 12
- Pure maths includes calculus, geometry and trigonometry all of which will be developed further at A Level.
- Mechanics is the study of the basics of Newton’s Laws of Motion and applies some of the fundamentals taught in the Pure Maths section of the course.
- Statistics involves learning various methods for data presentation, probability, understanding statistical distributions and also hypothesis testing.
Year 13
- Continuing your studies in Year 13 involves building up the skills learned in the three key areas of Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics in Year 12.
- Pure Maths extends knowledge and understanding of calculus and trigonometry and introduces the use of numerical methods.
- Mechanics extends kinematics and Newton’s Laws of Motion into two dimensions.
- Statistics begin to interpret correlation and estimation of correlation coefficient.
Entry requirements
Specific entry requirements: Standard A Level entry criteria, including grade 6 at GCSE Maths.
Future Careers
The content of the A Level is suitable for students who wish to pursue a career as a Research Scientist, Chemical Engineer, Dividend Analyst, Doctor and Architect.
A Level Maths will also support students undertaking a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) degrees and careers.
