Is this course for me?
The course will introduce you to methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. You will learn about structures and its functions, developments and variations. You will be inspired to develop your abilities to express yourself in speech and writing, producing texts for different audiences and purposes and in different genres. Independent study is an essential part of the course and you will need to read around the subject and understand new vocabulary and language theories in order to apply them to exam questions.
What will I learn?
Language, the Individual and Society will introduce you to textual variations and representations, children’s language development (0-11 years) and methods of language analysis. (40% of A Level. Written exam: 2.5 hours).
Language Diversity and Change will allow you to explore language diversity and change over time. You will study the key concepts of audience, genre, purpose and mode as well as language in its wider social, geographical and temporal contexts. (40% of A Level. Written exam: 2.5 hours).
Language in Action will allow you to explore and analyse language data independently and develop and reflect upon your writing expertise. This is a non-exam assessment where you will be expected to produce a language investigation (2000 words excluding data) and a piece of original writing with commentary (750 words each).
Anything else?
Studying English Language encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning and gives them a strong grounding in the academic principles relating to working with data. This workshop style of teaching and learning gives students academic confidence, as well as knowledge about the English language.
Entry requirements
Specific entry requirements: Standard A Level entry criteria, including grade 6 in English Language and grade 5 in English Literature.
Future careers
This course is particularly suitable for those students who want to study English Language, Linguistics or English Studies in Higher Education.
